6.   The Sacred Earth

Review by Mrinalini V. Sarabhai :

The Prithvi Sukta of the Atharva Veda is a prayer to preserve out Mother Earth from the earliest Vedic Times, Indian thought focused on the relationship of nature & the human being.
In the villages
In the aranyas (forests)
In the assemblies
In all places
Oh Earth may our expression be always in accordance with your wishes.

Manohar Aashi has been inspired by a great poem of an American Indian chief, A Heartrending plea to the white conquerors not to destroy their land. His delicate poetic yet powerful depiction of the thoughts in the poem and illustrated through film in superb visualisation.
The words of a great poet come to mind,
Be there a man with soul
so dead
Who never to himself has said this is my own,
my native land
I hope all who see it will be inspired to say
This is my own
My planet earth
Give me the courage
To cherish it
forever.

Review by Jim Hughes :

As a European,
Irish by birth I was impressed by this moving film by Aashi Manohar, All over the world the same cry is heard "Save nature take care of the environment."
The film is one of the most poetic statements I have ever seen on this subject. The film is direct simple, but not simplistic.
The wonderful images of the people at the beginning are beautifully woven into various visual narratives which unfold throughout the film.
The editing is carefully executed to support the narration. "The rivers are, our children …The waters murmur is the voice of my father's father." There is very little narration, just enough to remind us of our responsibility to nature which is there for our use and not abuse. The land is part of our history and the history of humankind. When we hurt nature we hurt ourselves I am reminded of the poetry of the great Irish poet W.B Yeats "Tread softly, you are treading on my bones". The Earth contains the bones of our ancestors as the waters murmur is "the voice of my father's father".
The seductive beauty of the Indian landscape is nicely captured. The exotic colours, and the natural habitat of each animal gives us glimpses of nature rarely. I believe this film is very special and deserves to be seen in all countries of the world.
I join with my brother Aashi and his concerns for the future of the planet, It is a message significant for all of us.
Thank you for your courage in making this film.
